Flooring Installation Across the Puget Sound

Hardwood, engineered, laminate, LVP, vinyl plank, carpet, tile and epoxy — installed over a subfloor that was actually prepared.

The short answer

Most flooring complaints are subfloor complaints. Squeaks, gaps, cupping, cracked tile and lifting plank almost always trace back to a subfloor that was not flat, not dry or not fastened properly before the flooring went down. We check flatness and moisture before we order material, and we tell you what the prep will cost up front rather than discovering it on install day.

Every flooring type, and when each one is right

Hardwood floor installation

Solid hardwood is the right call above grade in a stable, heated space. It can be refinished several times, which is why 1920s floors in Ballard and Wallingford are still in service. It is the wrong call over a damp crawlspace or in a basement, and in this region crawlspace moisture — not indoor humidity — is what moves wood. We check crawlspace conditions and the vapour barrier before specifying solid hardwood. Our full comparison: solid hardwood vs engineered wood in a damp climate.

Engineered wood flooring

A real wood wear layer over a dimensionally stable core. Handles moisture swings better than solid, can go over concrete slabs and radiant heat, and comes in wider planks without the cupping risk. Refinishable once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness — ask, because thin wear layers cannot be sanded at all.

LVP and vinyl plank flooring

Luxury vinyl plank is genuinely waterproof, which makes it the sensible answer for basements, laundry rooms, rentals and households with dogs. It is fast to install and forgiving. It will not add resale value the way wood does, and cheap LVP telegraphs every subfloor imperfection.

Laminate flooring

Cheaper than LVP, harder wearing on the surface, and unforgiving about standing water at the seams. Fine in bedrooms and living areas, a poor idea in a bathroom.

Tile flooring

The most durable floor you can install and the most demanding of the substrate. Large-format tile in particular telegraphs every high and low spot as lippage, so the floor underneath has to be brought within a tight tolerance. This is where our background helps — see tile and natural stone.

Carpet installation

Still the right answer in bedrooms and on stairs for sound and comfort. The pad matters more than most people realize.

Epoxy and concrete coatings

Garages, shops, basements and light commercial. Surface preparation is the entire job — epoxy over an unprepared slab peels.

What we do before any flooring goes down

  1. Check flatness. Most flooring manufacturers specify a maximum deviation over a given span. Older Puget Sound framing has settled and rarely meets it without work.
  2. Check moisture. Slab moisture testing where relevant, crawlspace conditions and vapour barrier where there is a crawlspace.
  3. Fix the squeaks now. Refastening a subfloor is cheap while it is exposed and impossible afterwards.
  4. Plan transitions and heights. Door clearances, thresholds between materials, and how the new floor meets what is staying.

Common Questions

Questions we get

How much does flooring installation cost?

It depends far more on subfloor prep and material choice than on square footage. A flat, sound subfloor with LVP is at one end; a settled 1920s floor needing leveling before large-format tile is at the other. We give a free written estimate separating prep from material and labor.

Can you install flooring over my existing floor?

Sometimes. LVP and laminate can float over sound, flat existing flooring. Tile generally cannot go over a flexible substrate. It also raises the finished height, which affects doors and thresholds. We assess it rather than assuming.

What flooring is best for a basement or damp area?

LVP or tile. Both tolerate moisture. Solid hardwood does not belong below grade in this climate, and laminate swells at the seams if water sits on it.

Do you move furniture and haul away the old floor?

Yes, both. Demolition, disposal and reinstallation are in the estimate as line items so you can see what they cost.

How long does a flooring job take?

A single room is usually one to two days plus any prep. A whole main level runs several days. Material acclimation matters for wood — it needs time in the house before installation, and skipping that is how gaps appear in month three.
