Countertops & Cabinets
Quartz, granite, marble and natural stone countertop installation, custom cabinets and built-in millwork — from a contractor who came up in stone fabrication.
The short answer
Countertop installation is decided before anything is cut. Which slab, which part of the slab, where the seams fall, and which direction the veining runs are permanent choices made at the yard, not in your kitchen. Our owner spent years in natural stone and countertop fabrication before general contracting, so we plan slab layout and seam placement on paper first and walk it with you.

Countertop materials, honestly compared
Quartz countertops
Engineered stone. Non-porous, so it never needs sealing and it does not stain. Consistent from slab to slab, which makes ordering predictable. It is not heatproof — a pan straight off the burner can mark it — and it is not UV stable, so it is a poor choice for an outdoor kitchen. For most families it is the correct default.
Granite countertops
Natural stone, extremely heat tolerant, and every slab is different, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on the person. Needs sealing periodically. Better value per square foot than it was ten years ago because quartz took the fashion.
Marble and soft natural stone
Beautiful and demanding. Marble etches from anything acidic — lemon, wine, vinegar — and that is chemistry, not a defect. If you want marble, want it knowing that it will develop a patina. In a bathroom or on a bar it is far less risky than around a working range.
Solid surface and butcher block
Solid surface is seamless and repairable; butcher block is warm and cheap and needs oiling and care around a sink. Both have their place.

Slab layout, book-matching and seams
On any slab with real movement in it, three decisions determine whether the finished top looks designed or merely installed:
- Which part of the slab goes where. The most dramatic figure should land where people actually look — usually the island, not behind the range where a hood covers it.
- Book-matching. Two adjacent slabs cut from the same block and opened like a book so the veining mirrors. It requires enough consecutive material from one block, so it is decided at the yard before purchase, not afterwards.
- Seam placement. Seams should fall where they are least visible and least stressed — never across a cooktop cutout, never in the middle of a run you look down.
Countertops are templated after the cabinets are physically installed, then fabricated, then delivered. That sequence cannot be compressed, and it is usually what sets the schedule on a kitchen.
Cabinet installation and custom cabinets
We install stock, semi-custom and fully custom cabinetry, and we build custom millwork — built-ins, panels, floating shelves, window seats and trim carpentry to finish it properly.
The most common problem with owner-supplied cabinets is a missing filler or panel that stops installation cold, so if you are ordering your own we will review the order before it is placed. The second most common problem is a floor that is not level: cabinets have to be shimmed to a true plane or the countertop will not sit right and the doors will never align.

Questions we get
How much do countertops cost installed?
It depends on material, edge profile, cutouts and how much prep the cabinets need. Quartz and granite are in a similar band; exotic natural stone is higher. We price it after seeing the layout and give you a free written estimate.
Can you book-match slabs?
Yes, when there is enough consecutive material from the same block. That is determined at the slab yard before purchase, so it has to be planned rather than requested after fabrication.
Do I have to seal quartz?
No. Quartz is non-porous. Granite, marble and most natural stone do need periodic sealing, and we will tell you how often for the specific stone you choose.
Will you install cabinets I bought myself?
Yes. We will review the order before it is placed if you let us — missing fillers and panels are the usual reason an owner-supplied cabinet install stalls.
How long after cabinets go in do countertops arrive?
Templating happens after cabinets are installed, then fabrication, then delivery. Plan on a couple of weeks in most cases. We confirm the shop's lead time before demolition so the gap is known rather than a surprise.
