Natural Stone vs. Quartz Countertops: An Honest Comparison
Marble, granite, quartzite and engineered quartz compared honestly — maintenance, durability, cost and how each actually lives.
This decision gets oversimplified constantly. Here's how these materials actually behave once they're in your kitchen.

Engineered quartz: the low-maintenance choice
Non-porous, never needs sealing, highly stain resistant and consistent slab to slab. It's the practical answer for most kitchens. The tradeoffs: it can scorch under a hot pan, prolonged direct sunlight can discolor some products, and the pattern repeats in a way natural stone doesn't.
Granite: durable and underrated
Extremely heat resistant and hard. Needs periodic sealing, and quality varies widely by slab — some granite is dense and nearly maintenance-free, some is porous. Granite fell out of fashion, which means it's often good value now.
Marble: beautiful and demanding
Marble is soft and acid-sensitive. Lemon juice, wine and vinegar will etch it. It will develop a patina — that's inherent to the material, not a defect. If that patina reads as character to you, marble is wonderful. If it will bother you every time, choose something else. Being honest with yourself here prevents real regret.
Quartzite: often the right answer
Natural stone with the look of marble and hardness closer to granite. More expensive and harder to fabricate, but it handles a working kitchen far better than marble does. Note: some material sold as quartzite is actually softer dolomitic marble — ask, and verify.
Fabrication is half the job
Where seams land, whether veining is matched across a seam, how edges are profiled, whether an island is book-matched — these separate a good installation from a great one. It's the part that's hard to un-see once it's wrong, and it's where fabrication experience matters.
Our honest recommendation
Quartz for busy family kitchens. Quartzite when you want natural stone in a working kitchen. Marble on an island or a bar where the patina is welcome and the wear is lighter. Granite when value matters and you find a slab you love.
Common questions
Can you help me choose materials?
Yes, and we'll tell you when a cheaper option is fine. We'd rather you spend the money where it matters.
Do you supply materials or do I?
Either works. Some clients want to select and purchase their own finishes; most prefer we handle it. We're happy with either as long as it's clear up front.
